Due to King John of England's excessive taxes and abuse of power, the nobles made him sign the Magna Carta. The Magna Carta was a document made in 1215 that established due process of law, rights of nobles, and laws the monarch must follow.The Magna Carta turned the council into a Parliament over time.
All hail King Louis!
In 1226, a King named King Louis IX rose to the thrown and was one of the most admired French rulers. He was generous, noble, and devoted to justice and peace. He was a deeply religious man and pursued religious goals. He persecuted heretics and Jews and lead thousands of knights into two wars against the Muslims.

In Medieval times,new writings began to appear in the vernacular, or everyday language of ordinary people. These writings captured the spirit of the High Middle Ages. A particular poem by the famous Italian poet, Dante Alighieri, takes the readers on journey through hell and purgatory, where souls await forgiveness. In this poem, much like many other of his works, the readers are introduced to humor, tragedy, and a quest for religious understanding.
In 1429, a 17-year-old peasant woman by the name of Joan of Arc went before Charles VII and told him that God sent her to save France. Reluctantly, Charles VII agreed. After a whole year of campaigning, Joan proved her mission through several victories. But short after, Joan was taken captive by allies of the English and was burned at the stake. She was later declared a Saint.
