Matilda lost the necklace the her friend let her borrow. So Pierre went out to lookfore it.
They ended up with nothing because they had the buy a 36,000 dollar necklace instead of telling the truth.
Matilda found out that the necklace only cost 500 franks and she paid 36,000 franks for the necklace.
