When Beowulf hears story of the destruction caused by Grendel, he decides to travel across the sea with fourteen of his bravest warriors until he reaches Hrothgar’s kingdom to help defeat him.

Beowulf has always had his supernatural aid. His supernatural aid is his strength and bravery.
Time went by, the boat was on water. In close under the cliffs. Men climbed eagerly up the gangplank, Sand churned in surf, shining war-gear In the vessel’s hold, then heaved out, Away with a will in their wood-wreathed ship. Over the waves, with the wind behind her And foam at her neck, she flew like a bird Until her curved prow had covered the distance. (210-219)
Beowulf crosses the first threshold when him and his army travels across the ocean to help Hrothgar protect his kingdom from Grendel's destruction.
