On May 13, 1914, Boxer Joe Louis was born in Lafayette, Alabama. He would become heavyweight champion of the world in 1937.
On June 22, 1938, Louis won against Max Schmelling and became a heavyweight boxing champion. A few years later he enlisted in the Army and gave his prize money to the US government.
Joe Louis passed away on April 12, 1981. In 1990, Joe Louis was inducted into the boxing hall of Fame
