The Ural Mountains were beneficial to the Russians due to the protection they give and the minerals they contain. The land of Russia consists of a densely forested, swampy, and flat north and a hilly grasslands in the south. The 3 major rivers are The Dnieper, Don, and Volga. These rivers allow travel and many resources.
During the early ages of the Byzantine Empire, many of the forests were inhabited by tribes of Slavis traders and farmers.
Within the 800's, small bands of adventurers known as Rus, however most likely Vikings, built forts along rivers and settles among Slavs.
Russia est. 800
Legend has it that the Slavs invited Viking chief Rurik to be their king.
Novgorod est. 862
Novgorod happened to be Russia's first important city.
Around 880, Oleg, a nobleman from Novgorod moved to Kiev on the Dnieper River. Due to the river providing transportation, Kiev grew into a principality.
