Looking for laborers! 33 cents a day Women only!
As Emily adapted to her new home, she went out to learn English and to search for a job. She came across a textile factory looking for women laborers. Excited, she asked the woman about it an was soon hired.
After working at the factory for 2 years, Emily's wages were lowered, her hands blistered, and she was taxed excessively. She is now living in a tenemant, that shares one bathroom each floor. Desperate, she decides to write her parents in Ireland.
Dear Mother and Father, I hope all is well, as I am not. I have a job at a factory and I am payed by the day. I share a crowed room with 6 adults, and 3 children. People here are not friendly at all. They look at us immigrants as a disease in their streets. I often here people curse me and sometimes even throw objects at me. I have joined a secret group that will become public soon. It is called the Womens Labor Movement. We hope to gain rights for our being. Until next time, Emily Anne
