Clara Barton became a nurse during the Civil War even though she had no prior experience other than caring for her ill brother. She became known as "Angel of the Battlefield" for her work.
The nursing profession was in its infancy and was dominated by men-women generally were considered too frail to cope with rigors of administering the sick.
This helped start the Red Cross, and other nursing foundations that we have today.
