Storyboard Text

  • Well... I know I do owe you 12 and that leaves you with more than 23.
  • And if you have -5 pens from all the pens that you owe, you'll have to find some way to balance the total amount to 23. So you'll have to find how many pens you actually need.
  • Somehow I need to end up with 23 pens, is there some way you can help me solve this?
  • So the problem you need is -5x-12=23. So the first step is getting rid of those extra twelve pens.
  • Well based on what we've learned in class... you need to find the value of x in order to get the right amount of pens.
  • (After telling her the situation) How do I solve this problem without going around the house and counting ever pen there is?
  • So you'll add the inverse of this (+12) to each side leaving you with -5x=35
  • I'm getting there...
  • No, that means you can give someone 7 pens to get the total amount down to 23.
  • Well then how do I get to 23?
  • After all of that, you're telling me I actually don't need any pens...
  • You'll have to do the same thing over again but now with a different equation...
  • That being said, you divide both sides by -5 in order to get the x alone.
  • So how many pens do I need?
  • After that you should end up with x= -7. So that should mean you need about -5 pens to get 23.
