  • Annemarie was brave standing up to the soldier. She didn't know what was in the packet, she only knew that it was important. She was upset at the soldier for ruining Uncle Henrik's lunch and opening the packet, but she stayed calm and went on with the plan.
  • Friendship
  • The Johansen family was being brave to the Germans because they didn't want the Germans to find out that Ellen was not Lise. They were scared on the inside, but they showed their courage and tricked the Germans. It takes bravery to stand up to a soldier who just pulled on your hair.
  • Friendship
  • It is hard for Mr. Johansen to be brave because he doesn't know what is happening to his family. They might have been captured by the Nazis, or worse, they might have been killed. I don't know about you, but I would be scared to death if my family was gone.

  • This represents friendship because Ellen is being funny saying that she is the Dark Queen from in the school play to Annemarie. Annemarie finds this funny because she knows how much Ellen likes to act, and sometimes her characters can be funny.Beginning a great laugh can start a good friendship.
  • Running in the fields together represents friendship by never being alone. As Annemarie and Ellen run through the field, they find other creatures with friendships. Everyone needs a friend because without one who would always be by your side.
  • This represents friendship by having hope that Ellen and her family will return and until then, Annemarie is determinded to wear the necklace until Ellen gets back. This means that Annemarie will always be loyal to Ellen and will always hold on to her.No matter what, friendships will never be broken.
