System of Alliances
On June 28,1914, the royal couple was murdered while visiting Bosnia. They were killed by Gavrilo Princip. He was apart of a Serbian terrorist group who were angered by the take over of Bosnia by Austria-Hungary. Soon, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia.
Nationalism led some European powers to put national interests first, regardless of the consequences for other countries. Germany's rapid growth and military power led them to seek and overseas empire. Militarism influenced powers to modernize and expand their forces. Imperialism added more tension because Britain and France were colonizing in Asia and Africa. Germany wanted in also but they had to take land so competition for trade and colonies.
The system of alliances linked European nations together. The alliances were used so that nations could assist one another in case of an attack. Conflicts started and led the European nations to split into two alliances. Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire sided on the Central Powers side. Then, France, Britain, Russia and later the U.S., all joined the Allied powers.
