By the early 1900's, Russia still had a tsar, a king that ruled the entire country.
The poor people and workers of Russia did not like the tsar, for he was unkind to them and did not help them during times of need.
When soldiers appeared and fighting broke out in Russia in 1917, many people feared that a revolution would begin against the tsar, and people would struggle.
Anna was one of these people who feared for her life. She decided to escape before the revolution began. She got on a boat, left her family, and set sail for America to build a new life.
It took Anna many weeks on the sip to get to America. The journey was dangerous, stormy, and unsafe, but Anna pulled through, fueled by determination.
In December 1917, Anna finally set foot in America, on Ellis Island, alone and determined to start a new life.
