  • Call to Adventure
  • There are many dangerous things outside. Please listen and stay inside in the gates please.
  • Threshold
  • Who is he? I thought daddy said there are no children here, except for Gretel and I.
  • Who is he? I thought daddy said there are no children here, except for Gretel and I.
  • I hope he gives the apple to me...
  • Guardians, Mentors, and Helpers
  • Sister, do you know why there's a fence?
  • Bruno is simply bored with his life, being tutored and not having any social life with other children whatsoever. So in his free time away from studying he adventures, and eventually finds the concentration camp his dad has been working at. He sees other people, but his mom finds out and pulls him far enough so that the camp is far away from sight as she is scared what he might discover. Bruno, being the adventurous type he is, plans about how he can go back.
  • Physical Challenges
  • Who is he? I thought daddy said there are no children here, except for Gretel and I. Who is he? I thought daddy said there are no children here, except for Gretel and I.
  • Do you like the bread? I have more if you'd like.
  • This is when Bruno finally journeys outside his sboundaries again, and realizes that there is much more happening nearby than the simple boring life he's been living. Although he doesn't realize that they are in a concentration camp, he sees that there are children he could play with. He makes good friends with a boy named Schmuel and he visits him nearly everyday.
  • Mental Challenges
  • I promise dad didn't mean to scream at you. Even mom says so.
  • Bruno has a helper/mentor, which is his sister. They don't talk often as his sister and older, but when they do she does offer him advice and information. She tells Bruno that Auschwitz is some sort of farm, but Bruno convinces her that can't be possible without animals. Later on when Bruno asks what the fence is for, she explains that the fence is to keep Jew's away from their home. Her sisters words though go through one of Bruno's ear and right out the other.
  • Temptations
  • Where is Schmuel today? Should I try and go over to look for him? No... Gretel said to never go over the fence...
  • Physical Challenges that Bruno faced was that he was secretly hiding his friendship with Schmuel, and it was a struggle since he had to sneak out nearly everyday to talk to him. Another struggle that Bruno had was that, Schmuel told him he was hungry everyday, and Bruno was taking some of his own food, saving it, and gave it to Schmuel. Bruno overcame these challenges, by figuring out everyone's schedules and by sharing his dinner, so that nothing was suspicious.
  • Some Mental Challenges that Bruno faced was that he had no friends other than the housemaids, and that he moved away from his home, and has no one now. He overcame this by making friends with Schmuel, and by starting to talk to his sister more and more. He was also depressed, but his sister always helped comfort him
  • Temptations Bruno faced, was the choice of going inside the fenced area to play with Bruno. One of the days Bruno came, Schmuel wasn't there, and he wanted to go inside and find him. His sister however warned him no matter what happens, to pass the fence and go on the other side. He listened to his sister and just waited until the next day to see Schmuel.
