  • Hey Claire, I don't understand how to solve that problem in math. Can you help me figure it out?
  • Sure Zoey. Since we are going to Study Hall, I will ask Mrs. Barker if we can go in the hall so I can't help you out.
  • Here is a pencil so you can write out the problem for me.
  • Thanks. I will write out the problem and get the answer and you can explain how I solved it. Let's get started!
  • y/2 + 16 = 32 -16 = -16 y/2 * 2/1 = 16 * 2 y = 32
  • There we go. Now, can you explain to me how I solved that?
  • Zoey: First, you did the inverse operation and subtracted 16 from both sides. Then, you got y/2 on the left side and did the equality property of multiplication and multiplied it by 2 and got y. On the right side, you multiplied 16 by 2, because you need to do the same thing on both sides to balance it out, and got 32. The solution is y=32. To check, you see if 32 fits into y in the equation. So, y/16 + 16 does in fact equal 32! Let's go into Study Hall now!!!
