While on their way to rescue Cunegonde, Pangloss and the Baron told their story.
[W]hen you were hanged, dissected, stunned with blows and made to row in the galleys, did you always think that everything was for the best in this world?
Candide purchases the old woman, Cunégonde, and a small farm. Cunégonde reminds Candide of his promise to marry her, Candide does not dare refuse even if he's horrified by her ugliness. However, the baron again declares that he will not live to see his sister marry beneath her rank.
Martin, Pangloss, and Cacambo had gotten rid of the baron by returning him to the galleys. Everyone was unhappy with their new life, even Paquette and Giroflée, who recently arrived on the farm. They first meet a famous dervish who criticizes them for the questions they ask him. Later on, they met a family who lives in a roadside farm. He, Cunégonde, and his friends decided to follow the farmer's lifestyle and everyone was satisfied. Pangloss suggests to Candide once again that this is the best of possible worlds. Candide responds, “That is very well put . . . but we must cultivate our garden.”
