  • in the poem The Odyssey by Homer, the main character named Odysseus was kept captive on an island for seven years by the nymph goddess Calypso, Odysseus was set free because Zeus sent Hermes to tell Calypso to let him Odysseus go.
  • Circe
  • Odysseus and his crew run into the lotus eaters a group of people who eat the lotus plant. The lotus plant is like a drug that makes the eater forget about their problems and forget about their home. Some of Odysseus's men consume some lotus plants and go insane and Odysseus and the rest of the crew tie them down and start to sail to their next destination.
  • Land of the Dead
  • On Odysseus's adventure him and his group ran into Poseidon's son a Cyclops named Polyphemus in a cave and angered him by eating some of Polyphemus's food. Polyphemus get angry and decides to eat some of Odysseus's crew and keeps Odysseus and his crew trapped in his cave. But Odysseus was smart and told the Cyclops that his name was nobody then he offered Polyphemus some wine and he gladly accepted the offer and drank till he passed out then Odysseus and his crew blinded Polyphemus by stabbing him in his one eye and polyphemus tried to let his sheep and ewes out and Odysseus and his crew took the chance and escaped.
  • Sirens
  • During Odysseus's journey he had to make a couple stops and one of them was on Circe's island. When the crew discovered Circe she turned them into swine (pigs). When Odysseus found out about his men he decided to storm up there to confront her and on the way to her palace Hermes the messenger god gave Odysseus a plant to eat that will make her powers weak against him. When Odysseus got to Circe's palace Circe tried to use her spell against Odysseus but it didn't work so she offered to take her spell off Odysseus's men if he slept with her and he goes to the land of the dead to talk to the blind profit Teiresias.
  • Teiresias the blind prophet told Odysseus the future troubles of his journey home about how Odysseus will be the lone survivor and what waits for him back home in Ithaca a home full of suitors trying to take his wife and eating his livestock.
  • Sirens are women who lure sailors to their death with their beautiful singing. Odysseus had to pass the sirens in order to get back home. Odysseus ordered his men to put beeswax in their ears and to tie him up because Odysseus was curious about how a siren singing can manipulate a sailors mind. Odysseus was affected by the singing but managed to get away from the Sirens before able to get free from his restraints.
