The Archduke and his wife continued their route along Appel Quay, despite what had happened and arrived at the town hall, outraged. They were furious that they had been greeted with a bomb, but because the mayor was so nervous, all that he could muster as a reply, was the speech that he had prepared for later in the day.
Having witnessed the earlier events of the day, the remaining terrorists met in the park to discuss what they were to do. They talked for a bit, before Princip left to relieve himself of the stress and went to buy a sandwich in a bakery in the town.
Having known several of the victims of the previous attack, The Archduke and his wife decided that they would go and visit them in the local hospital. They drove back down Appel Quay; the exact road that they had driven up earlier.
Because of the discrepancy of the new route, the confused Schaeffer took a wrong turn and turned right into Franz Josef Street. The just so happened to be the exact same street on which Gavrilo Princip was having his lunch.
Having known that they were driving on the wrong Street, The Archduke informed the driver. He stopped the car to put it into reverse. Princip was shocked to see the arrival of the car, as he was only a few feet away from his target.
Princip fired shooting The Archduke in the jugular vein and his wife in her stomach (she was pregnant). The Assassin bit down on his cyanide, but as it was the same as Cabrinovic's it did not kill him and was arrested before he could put his gun to his head. The Archduke and his Wife were both pronounced dead by 11:30am.
