My project for Mr. Daly's class
Let me tell you a story about the biggest slave revolt in the 13 colonies called the Stono Rebellion. It all began in Charles Town (Charleston), South Carolina in 1739.
The slave revolt was started by Jemmy. Jemmy was a literate slave that wanted to back at the white people but in a different way than most of the others. He wanted to give them a lesson, but a painful one, and he had 20 slaves under his leadership to help him. Some of the group were veterans because they were either from the Yamasee War or they experience in their homes in Angola.
The slaves raided into the Hutchenson's which was like a warehouse-like store, and the attack the owners then they placed their heads on sticks. Then they went on to raid houses in the area, attacking the white owners, and burning down their houses.
Some slaves didn't join the march, they stuck back and helped out their masters get to hiding places so that they didn't get hurt.
The slaves preceded their march down a highway, carrying banners and yelling, Lukango which means liberty in our language
This slave rebellion was short-lived after the colonists rallied up and killed most of the rebels. The following year, the colonists killed 50 additional rebels.
