Immigrants of the North would have simple jobs like shipping products
Although it was illegal to own slaves in the North, the African Americans were discriminated greatly.
The south made money from their cash crops, the biggest being cotton.
The slave life was mostly on a plantation, picking cotton and harvesting other cash crops. They were punished often for various reasons, sometimes even none.
The free slaves in the south would still work, not as harshly, but were often kidnapped and brought back to slavery.
