We use the buffalo for many things, but first, we have to catch them. However this is not easy and thats why we have our skilled men to do the job.
Before the men went to hunt the buffalo, they held a special ceremony called the buffalo dance which lasted many days. They would dress as a buffalo and move like a buffalo in hope of calling upon the spirit to herd the buffalo closer.
Before we got horses, we used to hunt buffalo in 2 different ways. One way was to sneak up on the buffalo and shoot them with arrows. Also we sometimes disguised ourselves as wolves.
The other way we did it was to stampede a buffalo herd into 'buffalo jumps' so that the animals were trapped in narrow valleys or driven over a cliff and killed.
Once we had horses, we could kill many more than we could before. We would surround or stampede the buffalo and kill them by firing arrows. Each warrior marked their arrow so the buffalo could be identified.
The whole Buffalo was used, not only the meat. We used the bladder as food pouches, tail for whips, fur for clothing, tanned hides for tipis and beds and bones for arrow heads and weapons. Not a single part of the buffalo was wasted.
