Topic : Death Theme : Every action has a consequence Literary Device: Foreshadowing
Foreshadowing is a dramatic literary technique in which an important plot point is mentioned earlier in the story to refer back to and return later in a more significant way.
What is foreshadowing?
If Fortunato had noticed all of the signs that were foreshadowed in the beginning of the story Fortunato would have never followed him into the catacombs and would have never experienced the consequence of death.
...but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge."(238)
This is an example of foreshadowing because it tells us Fortunato would be revenged and it shows every action has a consequence because all of this happened he insulted Montresor's pride.
"I shall not die of a cough." (241)
Once again Fortunato is going to be killed because of insults. This is foreshadowing that Fortunato is going to be killed in another way.
