  • The Kurds are an ethnic group of people in the Middle East who have no homeland. As a minority in 5 countries, they have faced persecution.
  • This dates back to the end of WWI when European countries redrew the borders of the Middle East. They had little knowledge of nor concern for the people of the region.
  • Kurdistan Mandate
  • DENIED
  • Since then, many Kurds have demanded greater rights and autonomy, & in some places, independence...
  • Demanding rights
  • Genocide
  • Civil War
  • Demanding independence
  • ...but the experiences of Kurds vary from country to country.
  • The 2003 US invasion of Iraq led to the defeat of the oppressive dictator, Saddam Hussein. After this, and in the chaos of civil war, Iraqi Kurds gained more power.
  • KRG: Kurdistan Regional Government
  • As ISIS swept through Iraq, many Iraqi officials left their posts, and ISIS fighters took their places.
  • The Kurd's military force, the Peshmerga has taken them on. This presented Kurds with an opportunity to expand their control over new territory.
  • In September 2017, 92% of Iraqi Kurds voted for independence in a vote that has been condemned by Iraq & neighboring countries. All are exerting intense pressure on the KRG.
