General Zaroff the Devil
Even so zealous a hunter as General Zaroff could not trace him there, he told himself; only the devil could follow that complicated trail through the jungle after dark. But, perhaps the general was the devil--
The Cossack was the cat; he was the mouse. Then it was that Rainsford knew the full meaning of terror
I suggest too that you stay away from the far southwest corner of the island. We call it the Death Swamp.
The symbol of the general being the devil is expressed in correlation with the tone, because many religions and stories of the devil are shown him being evil and doing evil deeds for his own pleasure and amusement
The symbol of the cat and mouse "game" between Rainsford and Zaroff is expressed in correlation with the tone, because it even states it in the story that Zaroff has an advantage over Rainsford. All he could do is run and hide like a mouse
The island that Zaroff lives on is like a large mousetrap filled with many dangers. But these dangers can affect the cat and the mouse alike.
