  • Every year, the small village holds a lottery that usually is taken place near the end of June. The head of the household, usually the Father/Husband, grabs a slip of paper from the black box.
  • Climax
  • Conflict starts to stir as Tessie's husband, Bill, has selected the slip of paper marking that they are the family to enter the next procedure. As Tessie is trying to exclaim that it wasn't fair, most of the village tells her to shut up.
  • Falling Action
  • The Hutchison Family(Tessie, Bill, Bill Jr, Davy, and Nancy)are each picking a card. The Hutchison Family watches as Mr. Graves helps Davy pick a card from the box that sits upon the stool.
  • Resolution
  • At this point, everyone in the Hutchison Family has now drawn a card out of the box. As it turns out, Tessie has chosen the card with the black dot on it.
  • Tessie still believes that The Lottery is unfair and is still upset about it. Even though it does not matter as all the villagers are gathering stones to throw at her. This is the tradition of this village (and many other villages).
  • At the end of the story, all of the villagers are throwing stones at Tessie. Tessie, still saying it's unfair, gets hit in the head with a large rock. Old man Warner is ordering people to join in.
