Gregor! Your boss is here!
Gregor wakes up and realizes that he is now a beetle. The beetle is blurry to show that it is one of the dreamlike aspects of the novel that contributes to the surrealism. The apple on the desk is also a surrealist symbol. The picture of the unknown woman represents just that from the book, as well as the other aspects of the novel left up in the air. The whole film is in black and white to reflect the time that the novel was written.
We have some extra money from Gregor that we've been saving the past few years...
We can live off of that for a while.
Gregor's mother calls to Gregor from outside of his bedroom. The same symbols of the apple and the picture are shown. This scene gives the audience an idea of how important it is that Gregor keeps his job.
So the only reason they needed me was money...?
Gregor goes to the door even in his new state of being, again representing how important the job is to him. The same symbols of the apple and the picture are shown. Gregor is still blurry to show the dreamlike aspect.
This scene shows the father and mother discussing how they will get by without Gregor's income. This shows the idea of nihilism, and shows that Gregor's existence really means nothing except for the income he provides the family. The same symbols of the apple and the picture appear, and it is still black and white.
This shows Gregor in his room listening to his parents talking, and he realizes how little he truly meant. This shows the idea of nihilism, that his existence meant nothing except for the income he provided. Gregor is still blurry to show the dreamlike aspect of surrealism, and the same symbols of the apple and the picture appear.
