  • Quriky Quartz High School
  • Hi! My name is Ms. Cook and welcome to Quirky Quartz High School. Today, I'm going to teach you everything you need to know about the mineral Quartz.
  • • Non-metallic: Vitreous (glassy) • Chemical composition- Silicon Dioxide: SiO2 • Mineral family- Tectosilicates • Family characteristics- very strong, stable, 3D framework, known as the framework silicates • Conchodial Fracture • Crystal Shape- hexagonal
  • Okay class, today I need you to copy down a few notes about the mineral Quartz.
  • • Non-metallic: Vitreous (glassy) • Chemical composition- Silicon Dioxide • Mineral family- Tectosilicates • Family characteristics- very strong, stable, 3D framework, known as the framework silicates • Conchodial Fracture • Crystal Shape- hexagonal
  • Are there any minerals that are harder or softer than Quartz?
  • What are its special properties? Is it used often?
  • Tiana Carter 3Odd 1/25/17
  • • Harder minerals- Topaz, Corundum, etc. • Softer minerals- Gypsum, Fluorite, etc. • Special Properties - significant component of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rock - found in a large variety of colors (clear, white, gray, purple, brown, etc.) • Human uses- glass making, abrasive, gemstones, foundry sand

  • The class copied their notes, but a few students had some questions about the mineral.
  • The teacher told the students she would write the answers to their questions on the board and then they will discuss them.
  • Quartz has a hardness of 7, so there are minerals that are harder and softer than it.
  • You have all of the notes you need for the test next class. You are dismissed. Have a great rest of all!
  • The students left class and went home to tell their parents about the mineral they learned about in science class.
