Laius and Jocasta, the king and queen of Thebes, are having a child, but the Oracle of Delphi says that the king's son will kill him and sleep with his wife.
Spooked by this, the king stabs his son's feet with a pin and leaves him to die in a desert.
Luckily for him, a shepherd from the town of Corinth picks him up and takes him to the king and queen of his town as a gift, as they are not able to have children. He grows up thinking they are his real parents.
In Corinth, word is out that our hero is adopted. Bewildered, Oedipus sets off to see the Oracle of Delphi. He is told he is going to end up killing his father and sleep with his mother. Shocked, he heads of to Thebes, in order to distance himself from who he thinks are his family, but where his actual family are. See where this is going? On his way to Thebes, Oedipus comes across a man who unknown to him is his father. They get in a fight, and Oedipus murders him and his guards.
Outside the walls of Thebes, lies a Spinx beast who challenges Oedipus to the riddle of the Spinx, which Oedipus gets correct, causing the death of the beast. Crowned a hero for ridding the town of the Spinx, Oedipus is crowned king, after he had murdered the king on his journey. Many years went by, and all was good.
Unfortunately, one of the guards of the king (Oedipus's real dad!) had got away in the attack and told that Oedipus had killed the king! So the queen (Oedipus's mum!) who Oedipus had been sleeping with decided it would be a good idea for her to kill herself. So then Oedipus decided to gouge his eyes out.
