Another character trait that represents Gilbert is he never gives up. When he was moving the handcar his hands had gone through so much in moving the handcar that they had blisters and were bleeding.
Gilbert is very smart because he is always discovering ways that in his life that time is either going fast or its going slow.
There are many there many things that motivate Gilbert that show in his actions. I think one of Gilbert's motivations is the death of his father. This might make him a little more reckless and adventurous since his only relative passed away.
One life changing event that occurred was his father died at sea.
At the beginning of the story Gilbert would always think of how he hated time and what a tyrant it was. He would wait what felt like an eternity for his dad to come home from the sea but when he was home it would be like a split second before Gilbert's father took off once more for the sea. However at the end of the story Gilbert was more thinking of sideways is sideways and having a different feeling for time at the end of the story than at the beginning where he hated time. At the end however it seemed like he respected time more and understands it a little bit better now.
By the end of the story Gilbert has changed a lot since the beginning of the story. For example his father died so he might be a little more mature since he has no parents now. Also he is thinking about sideways time not just forward time. I think this means that you should just think of the now not what is ahead or behind you.
