  • Hamartia
  • Nothing you say is of value, your wasting your breath.
  • The murderer of Laius that you seek, is yourself.
  • Hubris
  • Say what you will. Whatever you say is worthless.
  • Peripeteia
  • Polybus is not your father.
  • King Oedipus refuses to accept the truth and is blind by his short temper and pride. When Teiresias explains the situation and who the murderer but Oedipus is stubborn and ignores Teiresias's statements about the murderer.
  • Anagnorisis
  • How strange a shadowy memory crossed my mind...
  • Oedipus shows excessive pride throughout the play. This is evident in his conversation with Teiresias. Oedipus disregards what Teiresias has to say assuming that the reason behind it is the Teiresias and Creon want to take his throne.
  • Nemesis
  • Oh god! It was True! All of the prophecies, their true!
  • When Oedipus is informed by the messenger that Polybus is not his father a reversal of fortune occurs. Oedipus was determined that that prophecy was past and that it no longer possible but after this information he believes it has come true.
  • Catharsis
  • My daughter deserve better, please take care of them for me for which I can not.
  • After Oedipus is informed of where Laius's murder took place, he realizes he was there and that suspects he could have been the murderer. This critical discovery leads to the path of Oedipus finding out the truth.
  • Oedipus soon finds out that he is the murderer and that Laius is his father and the prophecies did come true. This was destined for him and was unavoidable.
  • The audience feels for Oedipus at the end when he realizes his mistakes and tries to make up for them. He states that his girls deserved better and that Creon was right. He asks for a favor, for Creon to take care of his daughters. This create a sense of pity for Oedipus from the audience.
