Iola Ann is the daughter of a woman who, along with her mother, works for the Benoit family. Iola Ann is best friends with Isabelle Benoit. She is sent away because she is a child of mixed race, and also because she is very beautiful.
At school, Iola Ann misses Isabelle desperately, so one of the nuns suggests that she write her prayers of going home again down. So we learn that the letters in the boxes are Iola Ann's prayers to God.
To better understand Tandi, we learn that she came from a dysfunctional home, where she was often taken away from her parents. Her only stability was when she stayed with her grandparents on Hatteras Island.
Pap-Pap would take Tandi with him when he went to work as an insurance claims adjustor and also showed Tandi how to do carpentry work.
But now Tandi has fallen into one of her bad habits, which is dating men that aren't good for her. Ross is handsome and has money, but he is not good for Tandi emotionally, especially her self-confidence.
Tandi's daughter Zoey, who has always been the "little mother" to her brother, J.T., is starting to rebel. She doesn't listen to Tandi and is mad that they had to move. Tandi worries about how to connect with her.
