M. Loisel came home with an envelope. It was an invitation to a party, but Mme. Loisel wasn't happy like he was expecting. She said she couldn't go because she didn't have a dress or jewelry. He bought a dress and suggested to borrow jewelry from her friend.
Mme. Loisel went to her friend's house, Mme. Forestier. She gave Mme. Loisel a diamond necklace.
At the party, Mme. Loisel was the prettiest one there. She danced with joy. Everyone wanted to get to know her.
When M. and Mme. Loisel got home, Mme. Loisel realized that the diamond necklace went missing. They looked everywhere and M. Loisel went back out to retrace their steps, but with no success.
M. and Mme. Loisel had to buy a new diamond necklace, which they spent years paying off. They gave the new necklace to Mme. Forestier, but didn't tell her what happened to the original.
After finally paying off the necklace, Mme. Loisel sees Mme. Forestier and decides to tell her all of what happened. Mme. Forestier then tells Mme. Loisel that the original necklace was just paste and only costed 500 francs
