Since the late 18th century sealers had sailed across from Australia to hunt seals for their oil and fur. they departed on local Maori for enough food to survive
NZ's east coast is on the whale migration path to feeding grounds in the arctic so whalers soon joind the sealersin setting up bases in sheltered bays and harbours
whalers arrived at the bay of islands @1800 and were soon followed by trades buying flax to make tape, canvas sails and timber for ships
The first missionaries from England began arriving in the bay of islands in 1841 to tell Maori about christianity.
