Storyboard Text

  • According to the U.S. Constitution the Scotts are slaves and not citizens, so they cannot sue for their freedom.
  • The Dred Scott Case
  • This is not fair, this lady doesn't own me and my wife. We should be free and I didn't go through all of this nothing.
  • Slavery in the Territories
  • No, it is not fair because you all have the south and not for long slavery will end.
  • Slaves will be allowed in the western territories and there is nothing you can do about it.
  • North vs. South
  • In the North the Federal government should have more authority.
  • No, why have only the Federal government when the whole state should have more authority.
  • The Dred Scott case took him and his wife to court 5 times. Him and his wife were seeking freedom form there owner's wife. Their owner died which gave the Scotts a reason to be free. However this became an event to intensify the dispute over slavery.
  • Sectionalism
  • I heard the south is becoming known as sectionalist because we don't agree with Abraham Lincoln being President.
  • Slaves in the western territory became a political issue. There was many more issues similar to this which slowly lead to the American Civil War. Even though Abraham Lincoln wasn't President at this point, he still became the heart over the disputes involving slavery.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act (1854)
  • The North thought that they should still be connected to the U.S. which lead them to not believe in states having more authority. The South just wanted to be on their own away from the North.
  • Election of 1860
  • And the winner is Abraham Lincoln!
  • Because the south nullified the north's decisions the thought of secession came up.However, Georgia held conventions and other events that were involved with the debate over secession.
  • Yea! My family nullified that too. I think the south is definitely going to push for our states rights.
  • The Kansas-Nebraska Act was one of the compromises that were put in place to solve things between the North and South. This act allowed states to decide if they wanted to be a free state or slave-state.
  • Some of the compromises were repealed. However, Georgia approved the compromise because of the Fugitive Slave Act. After all of this the election of 1860 was the main cause for the south to secede.
