But what has good Parson Hooper got upon his face?
Sexton saw Mr.Hooper with a covering over his face. Many talk about it, saying they don't really like it. He's hiding something. He's turned awful. He's gone mad.
If it be a sign of mourning, I, perhaps, like most other mortals, have sorrows dark enough to be typified by a black veil.
It was a funeral for a young lady. Mr. Hooper showed up, still having the black veil over his face, but as he leaned over the coffin, the veil slightly hangs. It's said the corpse had slightly shuddered.
Mr. Hooper arrives at a wedding, black veil still present. Believed to bring evil to the wedding. Mr. Hooper wishes happiness to the newly weds.
Mr. Hooper's fiance wonders and wants him to take the black veil off. He explains why he wouldn't take it off. They somewhat argue, therefore, his fiance leaves him.
What grievous affliction hath befallen you that you should thus darken your eyes forever?
Mr. Hooper is near death. He lies on his bed, black veil still covering his face. Several people are surrounding him, including his ex fiance.
Every time the veil starts to move from Mr. Hooper's face, the ex fiance would place it back to the original spot. He passed with the veil still on his face.
