How does playwright Tennessee Williams use the character's actions, description, or words to make a strong statement about gender in our society?
This is Stella, " a gentle young woman, about 25". (pg. 13)
"I can hardly stand it when he is away for a night..." (pg.35)
This part of the play was when Blanch was questioning Stella about why she stayed in an abusive relationship. Even with Stanley's treatment of Stella she still chooses to stay with him, because she can't bare to be away from him. This directly challenges the idea that women need men in order to survive. Without a man women are lost, confused and unimportant.
"This is my house and I'll talk as much as I want to."(pg 61)
Stella attempts to make a stand against Stanley by showing that she has ownership over the house . This shows a change in the normal behavior of women at the time because they were expected to be submissive. This shows Tennesse Williams true feelings about gender where women are no confined to a certain role.
Both of these examples show the true nature of gender in society. There are and will never be concrete rules because it depends on the individual. Historic figures like Joan of Ark challenged gender roles and demonstrated that gender is not concrete. Even Stella changes her gender roles based of off these quotes.
