The US sympathized with Cuba. The Us had invested a lot of money into Cuba and when Spain put down revolts the Us was conflicted on whether to act or not. Eventually the Us did intervene.
The U.S.S Maine was sunk in savanna harbor. This Drove the Us to declaring war on Spain. Yellow journalism made it seem as thought Spain had sunk it.
Yellow journalism was a big factor in the Spanish-American war. People who read the news started forming opinions on the way the Cubans were being treated.
While the Spanish put down revolts, That had become more and more common, The U.S had to decide whether they wanted to intervene. President Grover Cleveland was for going to war with Spain.
If the U.S Had Cuba it could be used as a place for the navy to gather. and by taking it it would keep Europeans form having influence in the Western hemisphere.
