  • While most of the boys laugh, Piggy defends the boy being teased with the conch, acting as a superego.
  • "Let him have the conch!" (Golding 35).
  • "If we could only make barbs-" (Golding 51).
  • While Jack is expressing his id, trying to only do what he wants, Ralph is acting as a superego, prioritizing what they need.
  • "We need shelters." (Golding 51)
  • Roger and Maurice act as ids, acting out because they know no one is around to provide consequences for their actions.
  • "I cut the pig's throat" (Golding 69).
  • Jack is scolded by Ralph when the fire goes out. Ralph is acting as a superego, trying to get Jack to stop acting the way he is, and to do what he needs to do.
  • "You said you would keep the fire going and you let it out!" (Golding 70).
  • Ralph feels guilty because of Simon's death, acting as a superego, but Piggy gets him to focus on more productive things, acting more as an ego.
