Miss Lottie was peacefully watering her flowers, when Lizabeth, her brother, and the other kids sneak towards her and throw rocks at her and her marigolds. This angers Miss Lottie greatly, and the kids laugh and run off.
Lizabeth is trying to sleep, but is upset by the quarrel her parents are having. She ends up hearing her mother yell at her father, and her father's horrible, painful sobs. This upsets her greatly, and only adds to her internal conflict. She had never heard her father cry.
Lizabeth, deeply troubled with her crazy, mixed feelings, suddenly makes the decision to go out. She dresses and wakes up her brother. She is a few paces ahead of her brother, and soon she breaks into a run. She doesn't realize where she is going until she is in the destroyed marigolds in front of Miss Lottie's house. She is crying and furious.
