  • Introduction
  • Sammy(13) always obeyed what her father told her to do, and agreed to secrecy. Child sexual abuse (CSB) is the inclusion of a child in sexual activity that he/she cannot completely grasp or give consent to (Kellogg 2002)
  • I have to do whatever my father says
  • I wouldn't hurt you my child, this is our little secret, don't tell it to anyone.
  • Filled with fear and confusion Sammy always kept to herself, this led to depression and alcohol abuse to disregard her fathers sexual advances. Depression and alcohol abuse are short term effects of CSB (Beitchman et al., 1991)

  • As a result of her fathers continuous sexual advances, Sammy decided to run away to be free. Children that are sexually abused are at increased risk of running away (McIntyre and Spatz Widom, 2010)

  • Sammy couldnt trust men anymore, and had problems with attachment this led to dysfunctional relationships (de Jong and Bijleveld, 2015), subsequently leading her to promiscuity (Mayall and Gold, 1995
  • Sammy was having trouble copping with her life, so she attempted to suicide. Suicide is a short term/ long term effect of CSB victims. studies show that victims of CSB compared to non victims are 56% more likely to attempt suicide compared to 23% without a history of CSB (Beitchman et al., 1992)
  • Luckily sammy reunited with her enstranged mum who was helping her seek help for her symptoms of Post traumatic stress. A significant amount of sexual abuse victims suffer from PSTD, which includes flashbacks, nightmares , sleep problems(Finkelhor, 1990)
