Storyboard Text

  • I apologize to my community...Jonas...Please come to the stage now
  • We accept your apology
  • What did that mean?
  • Jonas had been selected to be our next Receiver of Memory
  • I don't feel brave at at...Not now anyway
  • Jonas has the qualities of intelligence, integrity, courage, bravery, and he will acquire wisdom and the capacity to see beyond
  • The Chief Elder announces that she has made a mistake and apologize for causing her community anxiety. The community accepts her apology and she asks Jonas to come to the stage to receive his assignment. The fact is, however, that he has not been assigned. He has been selected. (Page 74-75)
  • They changed again! I feel a tiny sliver of sureness for the first time... Maybe I am  meant to be the next receiver!
  • The Chief Elder tells the community that Jonas has been selected as the next Receiver of Memory. She also informs the community that he had been carefully selected because they could not risk another mistake, for there had previously been a fail in the last selection. Jonas is puzzled on exactly what the Receiver of Memory does, but he keeps his thoughts to himself. (Page 75-77)
  • I don't understand it yet. I don't know what it is.  But sometimes I see something. And maybe it's beyond
  • Jonas, thank you for your childhood
  • The Chief Elder goes onto explain the many qualities that Jonas has and will gain in order to be the next receiver of memory. Intelligence, Jonas has always had high grades. Integrity, Jonas has done small acts of transgression but always presented himself for chasiment. Jonas hears that his training will require pain, and that he will need/gain courage, bravery, and wisdom. Finally, the Chief Elder says that he will learn the quality of the capacity to see beyond. (Page 78-79)
  • Jonas...Jonas, JOnas, JONas, JONAs, JONAS,JONAS
  • As Jonas looks out to the audience, he noticed that they changed again. The same way they did with the apple. Again, Jonas does not know how to describe how they changed. However, this gives him a small bit of confidence and sureness of the path that would lie ahead. (Page 80)
  • Change...Change
  • Change...Change
  • Jonas explains to the community and the Chief Elder that he believes his selection to be correct. He then also tell the community that sometimes he sees something and that he thinks it is what the current Receiver of Memory calls it to be the capacity to see beyond. The chief elder thanks him for his childhood and leaves the stage, leaving Jonas alone in his thoughts in front of a sea of people. (Page 80)
  • Instantly, the crowd begins to murmur and chant his name. At first, just barley a whisper. The voices make their way up to a faster, louder chant, each name having a new level of loudness. Jonas recognized the chant to be the way that the community was accepting him and his new role. His heart filled with pride and gratitude, but at the same time he was full of fear. He did not know what his selection meant for his future, or what would become of him. (Page 81)
