The experimenter provides a controversial cover story about a investigation into the effects of sensory deprivation. The participants of said study experienced trauma.The aim was to replicate the aforementioned study at the VU university.

Control group results -3.6% believed they would be obey -31.9% said would disobey -64.5% said would report -18.8% thought others would obey -43.9% thought others would disobey -37.3% thought others would report
The experimenter then told the participant that he would have to write a statement to convince the fellow students that he names to participate in the study, omitting any negative connotacions. He would also say that the experiment was waiting for approval from the research committee, and that there was a chance of future promotion jobs and more money.
The experimenter took the participant to a second room, to show the the computers in which they were to write the statement, and then left. In the room, there was also a mailbox with letters to the research committee so they could whistle blow.
138 other students were used in a control group. They were given intimate details of the study, and were then asked what they would do, and what they thought the average student at the university would do.
