Hello Children! I am Dr. Lee and I am here to tell you about skin cancer. What do you guys know about cancer and its dangers?
I know that cancer is a group of over 200 diseases, cancer is basically an uncontrollable growth of cells, and cells are everything in our body from organs to skin. Ms Cavallo also told us that 560,000+ people will die from cancer this year in U.S alone. And we have also learned that smoking and sun may cause cancer. From the movie we saw in our class we learned that eating healthy will reduce risk of cancer.
I remember reading about them in a book, Basal is not as bad and can be treated if found early on by medication and surgery, 3 mil cases/year in U.S and usually old people around 60 get it. Melanoma is the most dangerous one, its when cells that give color to the skin become cancerous, and it is cured by chemotherapy or surgery, but its really rare, 300k cases/year.And "squamous" is when cells develop in outer layer of the skin, about 3mil cases/year and its treated almost the same as Basal cell cancer.
Oh, you guys must have a wonderful teacher that thought you a lot this year! Now, there are 3 main types of skin cancer: Melanoma, Basal cell cancer, and Squamous cell skin carcinoma. Can anyone tell me about it?
Oh wow Vadim you really are smart and learned a lot this trimester, I would bet you have a 4 in AP bio! If everyone is as smart as him, I dont expect I need to tell you all that skin cancer is mostly caused from going to the beach of being out in the sun for too long
But did you guys know that solar radiation just like normal radiation change your DNA if you have been affected by it for too long? This is what we call skin cancer.UV radiation from sun can damage your DNA and too much damage can cause cancer to grow on an inconstant rate damaging your skin.
But dont worry children, there are ways to prevent skin cancer from ever happening. Dont be in sun for too long between 10-4am,try not to get sun burned, avoid tanning beds, and use sunscreen when going to the beach especially as you get older. Try to wear UV glasses and cover your body from sun during summer.
And remember children, "Sun is always good, but not getting cancer is always better!"
