Storyboard Text

  • Saying Goodbye
  • New Beginnings Greece 1962
  • Sailing Away
  • Get to work!
  • Yes sir!
  • Having my last meal with my brothers before we go our separate ways as I couldn't find a job in Greece
  • Welcome to America
  • My aunt finally got me a job to work on the ships at age 15, they only accepted me because I told them I was 18 even though I'm still not making enough money to feed myself
  • Tough times
  • I'm so tired of working on these ship, I wish I could get out of here
  • I was working on the cargo boats as a sailor on an oil tanker going around from country to country delivering crude oil
  • A word from the wise
  • If you're going to leave the ships the best place to go is Canada
  • I agree with them for us we're to old to start a new life
  •  We travelled to the U.S where I spent a month and a half in Mississippi to load crude oil or grain onto the cargo ships before leaving for Toronto
  • I was thinking about how I could leave the ships due to the bad working environment. I knew I couldn't go back to Greece due to the lack of job opportunities, lack of education and the mandatory military service I would have to take when I reached 18.
  • Just when I was thinking there was no hope I had some encouraging words from my mates, I realised from their words of wisdom that in Canada I could find more job opportunities to make enough money to feed myself, get an education and not have to go to the military as it isn't mandatory
  • Your're young enough to start a new life in another country
