  • James Madison's presidency started on March 4, 1809. He is known as the father of The Constitution and for drafting and promoting The Bill of Rights. 
  • August 24, 1814
  • Battle of Tippecanoe, an engagement that served as a prelude to the War of 1812
  • September 14, 1814
  • We declare the War of 1812. 
  • June 28, 1836
  • The British burn Washington. This is in retaliation to the burning of Canadian Parliament buildings.
  • Francis Scott Key wrote "The Star-Spangled Banner" after an unsuccessful British offensive.
  • He died of natural causes in Montpelier, Virginia. His last words were "I always talk better lying down." He is buried at the Madison Family Cemetery in Montpelier.
