After a few days in the steamboat, Kurtz passes away. Marlow is affected by Kurtz’s last words, The Horror! The Horror!
Marlow feels out of place and cannot see things the same after witnessing the evil in the Congo.
Marlow visits Kurtz's fiancee to deliver the papers of Kurtz's greatness. Marlow sees how the Intended did not know the real Kurtz and decides not to tell her. He lies that the last words he said where her name. Marlow decided to lie because the truth was too dark.
