Jerome. Jerome is the protagonist of the short story. ...Jerome's father. The outer characterisation of Jerome's father simply presents him as a “writer” and a “widower”. ...Jerome's aunt. Jerome's aunt is his father's sister. ...Sally. Sally is Jerome's fiancée.
The housemaster talks with Jerome about his father's death. His father died when Jerome was young, but he remembers the story of the pig falling from the balcony and killing his father. He lies about his father's death his whole life. Jerome meets Sally.
Jerome talks with Sally about his father's death. He tells her what happened without any details, and he tries to tell her the truth before they go to his aunt's home, but he can't. Jerome begins to feel nervous about her reaction.
Sally takes it normally, and Jerome kisses her. He realizes how much he truly does love her. They go home.
The theme of the story is a shocking death. I was frustrated at the fact that Jerome Pushed everyone away because of his embarrassment of his father's death.
