Through this story board, Shakespeare employs the theme that death is a mystery.

Storyboard Text

  • Polonius and I will hide behind the curtains to spy on Hamlet.
  • To be, or not to be? That is the question— Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, Or to take arms against a sea of troubles, And, by opposing, end them? To die, to sleep—

  • No more—and by a sleep to say we end. The heartache and the thousand natural shocks
  • Claudius dismisses Gertrude and Ophelia. He explains that he and Polonius will spy on Hamlet in order to determine his source of insanity. 
  • After the ladies leave and Claudius and Polonius hide, Hamlet enters in the room. Hamlet begins contemplating suicide.
  • Hamlet states the mysteries of death are unknown. He thinks suicide is less honorable and fears the afterlife will be worse.
