conversation between Laurie and parents
Laurie, why did you make up this boy named Charles? You know how we feel about lying.
I know, but I liked how you and Daddy paid attention to me.
We always pay attention to you, son.
Laurie's parents felt they needed to have a serious conversation with him after learning from the teacher that there is no Charles in the kindergarten class.
Not like you did before the baby came. I miss when it was just the 3 of us. Now I have to go to school and you guys have fun without me!
Laurie's parents could see their son felt badly, but his response to their question surprised them both.
I have a great idea! How about if you and I camp out in the backyard tonight? Just us guys!
They knew they were good parents, and they were never too busy for their children,
That would be great, Dad, and I promise, no more Charles!
Suddenly, it all began to make sense to Laurie's parents. They hadn't realized how left out Laurie had been feeling since the baby came. Going off to school had only made him feel more like an outsider in his own family.
Laurie's dad had an idea.
Laurie was so excited. He realized he didn't need Charles to get his parents' attention, and that was the last time anyone ever mentioned "you know who"!
