Montag finished his shift at work and bumped into a teenage girl named Clarisse along the way. She later goes on to ask Montag if he is in fact "Happy." This was the start of Montag's pursuit of happiness.
Montag finds his wife, Mildred, lying on the floor unconscious then he calls the emergency line and the paramedics. They perform an emergency blood transfusion on her.
Montag has to go an old lady's house and burn ALL the books that she had hidden in their. She had a whole library in her house. She refused to go away and let them burn the books and she went on to light the fire herself on her and the books, making her the martyr of the book. Montag is shook and startled by what he just witnessed.
Montag's house is the next house on the list of the firemen's list to burn. His wife Mildred snitched him out and ran away. Montag was secretly stashing books in his home.
Montag lights his own possessions and house on fire, and he does so with a passion. He gets arrested and then lights Captain Beatty on fire, making him a fugitive and a threat to society. He is now on the run.
Montag runs towards Faber's house, his last hope, and Faber tells Montag to head towards the woods and follow the railroad track. He finds some very decorated and knowledgeable people who looked forward to his company. They later go on to say that they have memorized certain books to pass on to later generations. After the bombers blew up the city, they devised a plan to rebuild from that point on.
