Storyboard Text

  • Excuse me, Mr. Gerald! I need a background information about the Arab-Israeli six day war for my coming exam.
  • Well, the six day war between Arab and Israel was derived by multiple aggressions and a brinkmanship from Nasser - leader of the Egyptians at that current time (1950's).
  • Nasser threatened Israel !
  • At that time Syria also seeked for the demise of Israel. It is because of this that Nasser offered Syria an alliance in 1958 and so began The United Arab Republic. The merge between Egypt and Syria, and the "destruction of Israel" as Nasser called it.
  • In the middle of 1960 the other leaders of the United Arab Republic publicly doubted Nasser's approach toward the demise of the Israelis. Syria would not approve of this, so they tried to prove themselves by repeatedly launching small guerrilla attacks on Israel in 1966 and 1967.
  • What other minor conflicts occurred during the time ?
  • In 1967 there was an uprise in tension between Syria and Israel. By this point Israel was ready to launch an all out war. This caused serious trouble for Nasser as he had to support Syria or be branded a coward by his fellow Arabians. Under pressure, he decided to talk big and threaten Israel more with bluffs and lies.
  • Well, when did the war actually start and what did it look like?
  • The war fell on the morning of June 5th, 1967. The stealthy Israelis wiped out the Egyptian air force completely with their planes, and by surprise too. Very soon, afterwards, the Jordanians and Syrians joined the clash. But it wasn't long before the Israeli's airforce wiped their air forces out, annihilating the opposing Arab air force. There was a total of 400 Arab planes destroyed on that day, while the Israelis only lost 19 planes in the battle. This gave the Israelis the upper hand on air.
  • What happened on ground then?
  • Thanks Mr. Gerald now I have enough inform- ation for my exam
  • The Israeli ground troops conquered the Egyptian Sinai Peninsula. At the same time, they were also battling the Jordanian army in and around Jerusalem. Finally, after a long, hard battle the winner was declared on June 7th - Israel. The Israelis had control over all of Jeruselem - for the first time in 2000 years - as well as the West Bank. On June 9th The Israelis focused on the Syrians located at the Golan Heights. It was also hard battle they were again victorious. On June 10 Israel promised a cease-fire and finally the six day war was over. This meant victory for the Israelis.
