One more place to be our colony
Nationalism was one of the reasons that created tension in Europe. Nationalism led some European powers to put national interests first, regardless of the consequences for other countries.
Another key factor was militarism. When Germany modernized its army and added to its navy, Britain felt it had to do the same. Other major powers followed their lead. Soon the nations of Europe were in a full-scale military buildup.
By the 1880s, France and Britain had colonies in Africa and Asia that provided resources for them. Germany wanted the same, but for that they need take that territory from somebody else. The competition for colonies strained relations.
